Thin as biopics go, the power of Abela’s portrayal elevates the film, providing a poignance and strength that’s the clearest motivation to go, go, go. Then again, as constructed here, the two went hand in hand, with the lyrics to songs like “Back to Black” and “Rehab” directly addressing her addictions to her relationship with Blake and alcohol. In terms of capturing what animated Winehouse, the blinding star power that Abela emits here ultimately justifies the exercise. “Back to Black” premieres May 17 in US theaters.

She was 78. Ms. Hazleton announced her death herself, in an email that she scheduled to be sent to friends after she died. She had been diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer and chose to take her own life, as Washington State’s Death with Dignity Act allowed her to do legally, with the assistance of hospice volunteers. “Yes, this is a goodbye letter,” she wrote, “which is difficult for me, because as many of you know, I’m lousy at saying goodbye.”

For 38 calls, the agency said the funeral homes either refused to answer questions about pricing or gave inconsistent information about identical services. Funeral homes have to follow the FTC’s “Funeral Rule,” which provides bereaved consumers rights during the process and holds the business to strict requirements. One of the caveats is that funeral homes must give customers a general price list, and customers have the right to choose which services they want. Funeral homes that don’t comply could pay up to $51,744 per violation.

(AP) — A lawsuit filed by the family of a man who died after being held in a Northern California jail alleges he contracted a preventable viral infection there when its medical staff denied him critical HIV medication for two months. His mother, Lesley Overfield, a plaintiff in the lawsuit, handed the arresting officers her son's prescribed medication but he was never administered it, the filing says. "Medical records show that he was denied his prescribed HIV medication for the entire two months he was detained," the lawsuit alleges. Overfield's health deteriorated rapidly as his HIV “devolved into AIDS" and he was eventually released from jail and hospitalized, according to court documents. Overfield's death certificate said he died of encephalitis “and indicated that Nick contracted this virus two months prior to his death,” while he was in custody, according to court documents.

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan initially requested testimony from Assistant US Attorney Lesley Wolf in June along with a number of Justice Department officials involved in the Hunter Biden criminal investigation. The Department of Justice has made six high-level officials, including special counsel David Weiss, available to testify, but has not allowed the panel to interview Wolf.
